Our History
Memorial Baptist Church is a result of a deep interest in the hearts of dedicated people who felt the need for a place of worship in the vicinity of Vaucluse Road in Aiken.
On the first Sunday in October 1951, worship services began at the Vaucluse Road Baptist Mission, a mission sponsored by the First Baptist Church in Aiken. Those in attendance sat on 2x8 boards mounted on concrete blocks in a tent.
In November 1951, a tent revival was held and an invitation was extended to those desiring to become charter members -thirteen persons responded. Following this service, the First Baptist Church began the construction of a Church building on the lot donated by Mr. G.L. Toole. The first building of what is now Memorial Baptist Church was completed in December 1951 and services began on January 6, 1952 on a full time basis. The Church became a member of the Aiken Baptist Association in October 1952.
During the 1950’s, the Church began experiencing rapid growth because of the many new people coming into the area, the active visitation program conducted by the Church, and the close fellowship being experienced among the members. Two Educational Building were constructed and a new Sanctuary with a seating capacity of 400+ was completed and dedicated on December 11, 1955. Then in the 1960’s, a third Educational Building was constructed.
In 1976 a major construction project was undertaken by the Church. A Family Life Building was erected consisting of a gymnasium, kitchen and dining area, and upstairs activity rooms. In addition the Sanctuary was beautifully remodeled as it appears today.
During this period, the Church experienced some ups and downs in growth due to the changing work force in the area. But, a firm foundation has been laid, the many accomplishments in all organizations and the Christian growth of the membership established Memorial Baptist as a beacon inviting all people to come into this House of the lord for worship, fellowship and service.
